The command palette

The command palette finds any command, entity or asset by name from one box, so you can work without hunting through menus. Press CtrlK, type a few letters and press Enter. This page covers what the palette searches, how it matches and ranks, the prefixes for entities and assets, and how plugins add their own results.

Typing co finds commands, entities such as the coins, and assets.

Open the palette

Press CtrlK, click Commands in the app bar, or choose Edit › Command palette…. Two more shortcuts open it ready to search one kind of result:

ShortcutCommandOpens with
CtrlShiftKAssets › Go to entity…@, for entities
CtrlShiftFAssets › Find asset…#, for assets

What it finds

TypeFindsChoosing one
Nothing firstEvery command, and the best few entities and assets
A command's nameCommands, with their shortcut and categoryRuns the command
@ and a nameEntities of the open scene, with their parentsSelects the entity and frames it
# and a nameAssets, with their folderOpens a scene; selects any other asset in the Assets panel and shows it in the Inspector

Every command of the editor is there, including those without a shortcut or a menu item, and those plugins add. Commands that do not apply right now, such as Stop while not playing, are listed but greyed out. With an empty box, the commands you ran recently come first.

Matching and ranking

The palette matches letters in order, not only whole words: tg finds Toggle grid, nscn finds New scene and @crb finds the crabs. Matches at the start of a name or of a word, letters that follow each other, and shorter names rank higher, and so do the items you picked recently, so the palette learns what you use.

Results from plugins

Plugins can add results of their own under their own prefix, such as dialogue lines or quests, next to entities and assets. See Command palette in the plugins section.
